Plumbing in Pietermaritzburg
Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital, has some of the oldest building stock in KwaZulu-Natal, with Victorian red-brick homes and municipal buildings whose pipes and drains are well past their design life. Unlike the coast, the city sits in a basin that gets hot summers with heavy thunderstorms and cold winter nights, with frost in some low-lying areas, so exposed pipes and solar geysers need protection. The Msunduzi Municipality's network has struggled with leaks and outages, prompting many homeowners to install storage tanks. Government offices, schools, hospitals and the University of KwaZulu-Natal campus provide steady institutional work, and the Midlands farms beyond rely on boreholes.
Typical gas geyser installation requests in the area come from:
- Homes: homeowners install gas geysers to keep hot water running through load shedding
- Offices: offices fit compact gas units for kitchens and showers without electrical upgrades
- Schools: schools install gas geysers for hostels and sports change rooms
- Healthcare: clinics add gas geysers so hot water continues during power outages
- Farms: remote farms rely on gas geysers where electricity is unreliable
- Factories: factories use gas water heating for canteens and ablution blocks
