Plumbing in Cape Town
Cape Town's plumbing market was reshaped by the 2017–2018 drought, when the threat of Day Zero pushed thousands of households to install rainwater tanks, greywater systems, wellpoints and boreholes. The City of Cape Town's Water By-law also requires a plumbing compliance certificate before a property can be transferred, so sellers regularly call plumbers to check geysers, valves, stormwater connections and water meters. Older homes in the southern suburbs and City Bowl still have galvanised pipes due for replacement, while the Atlantic Seaboard's salt air shortens the life of exposed fittings. Restaurants, hotels and apartment blocks add steady demand for drain and geyser work.
Typical PVC pipes and fittings requests in the area come from:
- Homes: 40mm and 50mm waste pipe for bathroom and kitchen renovations and repairs
- Complexes: 110mm soil stacks and drainage runs serving multiple units
- Hospitality: large drainage runs and soil stacks for hotel and lodge ablutions
- Restaurants: waste pipe and fittings connecting sinks and grease traps in commercial kitchens
- Offices: soil and waste pipe for new washrooms and kitchenettes in office fit-outs
- Retail: drainage pipe for shop fit-outs, food courts and mall washrooms
